My journey
I grew up on a farm in northcentral Pennsylvania where I developed a strong work ethic and was taught traditional values. I learned to ride a motorcycle at the same time that I started walking. My experience as an entrepreneur began early when I started a firewood business in college inspired by my grandfather who built a logging company that my father continues to run today.
I worked hard to become the first person in my family to graduate from college and decided to serve my country in the US Navy after completing my engineering degree. During my 8 years in the Navy, I was stationed on a submarine and deployed to the Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea and South America. As the officer of the deck I was in charge of a $2B nuclear powered attack submarine and responsible for 120 sailors.
I am always pushing myself and decided several years ago that I wanted to run a marathon. I trained hard and completed the race. I really enjoyed the challenge and wanted to see how much farther I could go. Since then, I have run dozens of marathons and ultramarathons up to 100 miles.
Now that I've been an SMB CEO, my goal is to continue adding value to the owners and operators of small businesses. In addition to traditional financial and operational metrics I focus on the physical and mental health of the individuals and organizations they run to help all involved achieve the fulfilling outcomes they are seeking.
Wellness philosophy
My wife and I have been married for fifteen years and we've got two great kids. I lost track of them while I was operating. Thankfully, I was able to take a step back to reflect and reprioritize. This is where I landed:
-
Write down your priorities
-
Spiritual life
-
Wife then kids
-
Health then professional life
-
Friends then other family
-

-
Have a plan for your life
-
90-day priorities
-
1/3/10 year vision
-

-
Incorporate daily routines
-
Wake up between 6-7am
-
Eat 2/3 healthy meals and drink water
-
Read/write for 15+ minutes
-
Run, bike, walk, stretch or lift
-
Reflect 5+ min on priorities/vision
-
Go to sleep between 10-11pm
-

-
Develop a set of principles to live by
-
Priorities and Focus - Brutally prioritize your life by doing less, obsess and become great at things that are different from others
-
Growth Mindset - Maintain unyielding belief in your own potential. Dwell on the power of "Not Yet", don't be gripped by where you are "Right Now"
-
Slight Edge - Do small things every day that are aligned with your priorities and vision. Compound these small daily achievements into true success and exponential growth
